135 educational institution buses inspected


Transport authorities assessed the conditions of vehicles attached to education institutions for safe driving. As per the directive of Collector C.N. Maheswaran, checking operations had been executed to assess the running conditions. 

Regional Transport Officer K. Thangavelu said utmost care should be given for the safety of students while travelling in vehicles. The Motor Vehicle Inspectors checked the running condition of 135 buses in various parts of the district here on Friday.

Mr. Thangavelu said conditions were good for the vehicles which arrived here and similar test would be undertaken for other vehicles on Saturday. As many as 400 vehicles of various educational institutions were running in the district, he added. Rash driving of vehicles with deafening horns is being witnessed even on narrow roads, irritating the public. Stringent measures have to be taken against those who violate the regulations.

Rs. 4.12 crore allotted for for agriculture schemes


The State Horticulture Department has allocated Rs. 4.12 crore for implementing various development schemes in the district in the current fiscal. Under this assistance, the highest in last two decades, is expected to benefit 3,000 farmers to bring additional 1,880 hectares under horticulture crops.

Addressing a plant distribution programme organised recently by the Department of Horticulture and Vidiyal Trust, a non-governmental organisation, at Idaichiyurani in Vilathikulam taluk, M. Syed Ahamed Miranji, Deputy Director of Horticulture, Tuticorin, urged farmers to grade their produce such as chilli, coriander and onion to get better prices through direct marketing.

At the programme, 2,200 high-yielding tamarind grafts (PKM-1 variety) procured from State Horticultural Farm, Vallathirakottai, Pudukottai district, were distributed to 40 farmers at 50 per cent subsidised rate under Integrated Horticulture Development Scheme (IHDS).

Referring to Hi-tech Productivity Enhancement Programme, Mr. Miranji said that forraising acreage of tissue culture banana, Rs. 50,000 per hectare was given as subsidy towards inputs, including the cost of banana plants and drip and fertigation systems. For crops such as flowers, chilli, coriander, betel vine and cashew, Rs. 7,500 per hectare was given. 

Under TN-IAMWARM project, a subsidy of Rs. 12,500 to Rs. 15,000 per hectare, depending on the crops, would be given to beneficiaries for area expansion in strategic basin locations and potential belts to promote crops in non-conventional areas. 

S. Raja Mohamed, Assistant Director of Horticulture, Vilathikulam, said that under IHDS, a farmer was eligible for subsidy for one hectare for fruit plants and 0.5 hectares for vegetable crops. To promote area-specific crops in the district depending on agro-climatic conditions prevailing in each block, high-yielding PKM-1 tamarind grafts, a drought resistant crop, was being introduced in Vilathikulam block.
